Matthew 28 is the final chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, concluding with Jesus' resurrection and His Great Commission to His disciples. This chapter is packed with power, purpose, and a call to action for every believer. Let’s dive into the key themes and lessons from this passage.
1. The Resurrection of Jesus (Matthew 28:1-10)
The chapter begins with Mary Magdalene and the other Mary visiting Jesus' tomb after the Sabbath. They are greeted by an earthquake and an angel who rolls away the stone, announcing that Jesus has risen.
Key Lessons:
Victory Over Death: Jesus' resurrection confirms His triumph over sin and death (1 Corinthians 15:55-57).
Fear Not: The angel tells the women not to be afraid (Matthew 28:5). As followers of Christ, we can live in confidence knowing that He has conquered the grave.
Go and Tell: The women are commanded to share the good news. Our faith isn’t meant to be private—it’s a message of hope that must be shared.
2. The Deception of the Guards (Matthew 28:11-15)
After the resurrection, the chief priests bribe the Roman guards to spread a false report, claiming that Jesus’ disciples stole His body.
Key Lessons:
Opposition to the Truth: Even in the face of undeniable evidence, some will reject the truth of Christ.
The Spread of Falsehoods: The enemy will always attempt to distort God’s truth, but the Gospel prevails.
3. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20)
In the final verses, Jesus meets His disciples on a mountain in Galilee and gives them His Great Commission—a command that still applies to us today.
Key Lessons:
All Authority Belongs to Jesus (v.18): Jesus declares that He has all authority in heaven and on earth. This means that His commands are final, and His power is supreme.
Make Disciples of All Nations (v.19): Our mission as believers is not just to attend church but to make disciples—teaching, baptizing, and guiding others in faith.
The Promise of His Presence (v.20): Jesus assures us, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” We are never alone in fulfilling His mission.
